What does the "12" in a Chivas 12 years stands for?

Likewise for 18, 24, and so on...|||The years the whiskey spent aging in wood. Once it is bottled, it stops aging for the most part.|||the age statement on a bottle of blended scotch (like chivas) is of the age of the youngest whisky used in the blending process. this applies to all blended whisky like dimple and johnnie walker etc

the same rule applies with single malts but the major difference is that it may be the youngest age of the whisky aged at the distillery that has been blended.|||The 12 stands for the years it has aged.
